The Urban Game – Engagement with An Academic Game

This last week I decided to use one of my favorite engaging lessons ever – The Urban Game. When I first used this academic game in class a number of years ago, I did not anticipate how deeply it would impact students. However, I had students talking about how much fun it was for weeks afterwards. It was this day in class, and the positive aftermath, that led me to try different out-of-the-box ideas as an educator – some of these have even led to me winning national awards. I have been able to expand my impact and influence as an educator over the years and a lot of the confidence in my abilities as a teacher started when I first used The Urban Game. Leading this engaging lesson this last week was just as wonderful as the first time I did so. Here are some pictures of students working on their project and the finished result – with my city at the end.
